Our Museum Archivists will show you the best ways to preserve your personal and family collections and images. Subjects include preserving old photos and negatives, preserving garments and fabrics, how to save those posters and prints, and saving digital memories.

Research Tips

In this workshop, learn from the pros (specifically the Museum’s Supervisory Librarian and Reference Archivist) about how to make the most of the Museum’s online resources to find answers to your aviation and space-related questions as well as how to explore the thousands upon thousands of items held in the Museum’s collection. Attendees will be introduced to and given instruction on how to use the Library’s online catalog, the Archives’ research portal as well as the Museum of Flight’s digital collections site. The workshop will also cover additional resources used by the librarians and archivists at the Museum to answer the hundreds of research questions they deal with every year, as well as the numerous options available to the public to review material in the Museum’s collection for their own research topics.

Caring for Family Heirlooms

Objects Quilts, military uniforms, china, silver and toys; all items that hold a dear place in many families’ collective memories. And all items with distinct long-term storage needs. The Museum’s Collections Manager will teach you how to preserve your family heirlooms like a museum professional using archival quality supplies and techniques you can implement at home.

Books and Paper Materials

In this workshop led by the Museum’s Supervisory Archivist and Supervisory Librarian, you’ll learn how Museum staff care for and preserve the huge amount of book and other paper-based material in the Museum’s vast collection. Learn about the Museum’s best practices for caring for newspapers, books, letters, diaries, and manuals and learn how to apply those best practices to your own collection. Also get tips on how to organize your family’s archives.

Photographs

The Museum’s Supervisory Archivist will lead this workshop and you will learn about different photographic formats using examples from the Museum’s extensive photo collections. We will go over both good and bad preservation methods and look at supplies you can use to take care of your family’s prints, negatives, and albums.

Digitization


Digitization has become one of the best ways to preserve and share important family photos, documents and home movies. The Museum’s Digitization Team will teach the basics digitizing various types of materials, go over different techniques, and provide advice on managing your digital files. We will also touch on preservation of audiovisual materials.
