Space Talks! Live volunteers engage with guests about topics related to space exploration, astronomy, and the solar system in a 10 to 15-minute planned presentation. They will be able to engage from home via Zoom, with the connecting computer located in the Apollo Exhibit.

Duties

  • Develop one or more classroom-style presentations related to space.
  • Give at least one presentation per month over Zoom to an audience within the Museum.

Time Commitment

  • The amount of time needed for Space Talks! Live Storytellers to develop a presentation will vary depending on the pre-existing skills and experience of the volunteer. Storytellers may choose to create a PowerPoint presentation to screenshare during their presentation, or they could choose to screenshare photographs to help illustrate their points. The preparation process will include a technology check and giving a practice presentation to their supervisor.

  • Storytellers should plan to be on the Remote Storytelling screen a minimum of 30 minutes per month, planning for 10-15 minutes of formal presentation, 5-10 minutes of questions, and any additional tech assistance. If Storytellers would like to do multiple Virtual Storytellings per month they will need to work with their supervisor on scheduling. Each Storytelling instance can be logged as 30 minutes of volunteer time, regardless of how long the Remote Storytelling program actually took.

  • Storytellers who are interested in greater commitment can also enroll in the in-person Quonset Hut Storytelling program and/or the Speakers Bureau program.

Qualifications

  • Public speaking experience.
  • Basic proficiency with Zoom.
  • Interest in space exploration, astronomy, or other space related topics.
  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
