Michael P. Anderson Memorial Aerospace Program

Meet astronauts, engineers and pilots!

The Michael P. Anderson Memorial Aerospace Program (MPA) at The Museum of Flight is named in honor of Washington native and payload commander of the Space Shuttle Columbia. It leverages Michael’s legacy to inspire underserved middle school (6th-8th) youth from throughout Washington State to participate in the Museum’s exciting educational programs while being mentored by professionals in the aerospace and aviation industry.

The Museum has planned around the health and safety of our students, staff, and volunteers. the 2022 implementation of the Michael P. Anderson Memorial Aerospace Program will be offered via an online/remote format, with the possible opportunity of in-person bonus events in Spring.

In this high-energy and highly-engaging, online program, scholars will grow their proficiency in aviation and their awareness about career options within. Each month scholars are assigned a ‘Do It Yourself’ activity, will partake in an online Mission Launch event and an online Flex Friday, build relationships with mentors, and use clues to help solve a mystery. Bring your curiosity and an appetite for incentives as these experiences are out-of-this-world!

  • Mission Launches (2 hours)
Inspiring? Check! Motivating? Check! Surprising? Check! Check! Experience learning like you've never seen before! During a two-hour exclusive online event, we welcome you to the aerospace industry and teach the ropes to a career in space, flight, or engineering. Opening acts, hands-on activities, and behind-the-scenes access to the Museum—this mission is not impossible! Good vibes only, your future self will thank us later!
  • Flex Fridays (1 hour)
"Life takes off when fear is left on the ground!" They did it and so will you! MPA scholars come meet your mentors, learn about the games they play and the jobs they slay during this themed online kick back! Mentors are not just volunteers they are essential to our village; their enthusiasm, kind spirits, and expertise create a welcoming environment that celebrates identity and further encourages the next generation of STEM professionals. Our mentors are extraordinary examples of success; eagerly sharing their love for airplanes and space, careers paths, and providing valuable insight—students rely on them for guidance, motivation, and emotional support. Through the participation of mentors, we reinforce our scholars are worthy and capable of achieving success! We are looking forward to seeing these students grow and become gainfully employed.

A memorable experience requires all hands on deck! Through participating in (5) Mission Launch events and facilitating (1) Flex Friday group discussion, our mentors help foster community! During monthly Mission Launch events, mentors enthusiastically greet students, answer questions, assist with classroom tasks, and provide cheer! During Flex Friday meetings mentors are individually assigned an hour with scholars to showcase who they are and answer questions specifically about their careers.

This is a volunteer role. Support and training to work with youth are provided.
