The Museum of Flight is seeking submissions for three opportunities that include a group show of existing visual artwork and proposals for an Artist in Residence and a New Media Installation.

On June 10, 2023 The Museum of Flight will boldly depart from its traditional flightpath to host a museum-wide, community-focused celebration connecting the region’s vibrant art scene with its rich aerospace history. Art+Flight will exhibit artwork in all mediums, plus offer interactive mural painting, music, dance and plenty of family activities. Guest speakers and engaging community events will regularly enhance the celebration through January 7, 2024.


Who is Eligible?

Artists currently living in, or who are past residents of, the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, and Idaho) who are 18 years or older. Artists from diverse backgrounds, including women, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), people with disabilities, or who are from other marginalized groups are encouraged to apply.

Museum of Flight staff, volunteers and Board members are not eligible to participate.


Selection Process

A committee of notable local curators will review all submissions to recommend top candidates. Submissions by top candidates will be reviewed and approved by The Museum of Flight based on the selection committee's recommendation. The selection committee includes:

Call for Artists: Visual Art for Exhibition

We are seeking submissions of existing visual artwork that is conceptually connected to flight, space-travel or content within the Museum’s Collection for an exhibition in the historic William E. Boeing Red Barn, the birthplace of the Boeing Airplane Company.The location offers a warm, rustic appeal with its historic wooden architecture.

Artwork in a variety of media, except for the materials listed below, will be considered for the exhibition. The Museum will provide exhibition cases for artwork and installation services as appropriate for the material and artwork type.

Request for Proposal: New Media Installation

The New Media installation will be in Room 2 within the William E. Boeing Red Barn, the birthplace of the Boeing Airplane Company, that is part of The Museum of Flight’s Collection and seamlessly integrated into the footprint of the Museum.The location offers a warm, rustic appeal with its historic wooden architecture.

The artist will work closely with The Museum of Flight's exhibition team to develop a digital and iterative experience for visitors that may change over the course of the exhibition. The resulting artwork will be an immersive installation in a light controlled environment.

Artists must be familiar with working in a museum/gallery setting, and comfortable interacting with visitors and speaking freely about their process and inspiration.

Only a single artist or artist team will be selected for this opportunity.

Request for Proposal: Installation & Artist in Residence

The installation and artist-in-residence component will be located within the Northwest Aeroclub Room inside the William E. Boeing Red Barn, the birthplace of the Boeing Airplane Company, which is part of The Museum of Flight’s Collection and seamlessly integrated into the footprint of the Museum.The location offers a warm, rustic appeal with its historic wooden architecture.

This room also serves as a popular space for private events, so the installation must be made with durable material to withstand high-volume use of the space by all ages.

Only a single artist or artist team will be selected for this opportunity.


Artist Stipend: $10,000
