This talk by Docent Jon Fehrenbach tells the story of the developments leading to the Birth of Flight, the first powered, controlled flight accomplished by Orville and Wilbur Wright on December 17, 1903. The story begins with the experiments in gliders that originated in Europe in the 1880s where Otto Lilienthal enjoyed great success. After Lilienthal's death in 1896, Orville and Wilbur Wright began their studies of flight, developing and flying their own glider designs as a predecessor to their first successful powered flight in 1903. This talk follows the further development of aviation in the United States and in Europe over the next ten years, up to the beginnings of World War I.
