American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Lecture at The Museum of Flight

Date:
12/13/2008

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics is the world's largest technical aerospace society. The AIAA, in conjunction with The Museum of Flight, is presenting "A Perspective on Optimization," a lecture by Dr. Kumar G. Bhatia, Senior Technical Fellow of The Boeing Company in the areas of Aeroelasticity and Multidisciplinary Optimization. This special presentation is Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. in the William M. Allen Theater.

"Optimization in its multitude of forms has entered all aspects of design," writes Bhatia, "It is interesting to consider the growth of the finite-element methods and the Computational Fluid Dynamics and how they have become pervasive in industrial environments...We can discern how the penetration of multidisciplinary optimization in every day design environment might be accelerated by understanding the two evolutionary paths." Bhatia will present insights on the role of optimization in the design process. The lecture is free with Museum admission.

The non-profit Museum of Flight is one of the largest independent air and space museums in the world. The Museum's collection includes more than 150 historically significant air and spacecraft, as well as the Red Barn®--the original manufacturing facility of the Boeing Co. The Museum's aeronautical library and archival holdings are the largest on the West Coast. More than 140,000 students are served annually by the Museum's on-site and outreach educational programs - the most extensive museum-based youth aviation and space education program in the country. The Museum is the only aviation and space museum in Washington State that is both nationally accredited with the American Association of Museums and a Smithsonian affiliate.
