This year, The Museum of Flight's Memorial Day Weekend programs are dedicated to the heroism and valor of the pilots of the elite, all African-American 332nd Fighter Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps: the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II. In particular, we are honoring those Airmen who had the misfortune to get shot down and become German POWs. These brave men faced not only the treatment of their captors in Germany, but also the tragic racism that came with returning home to 1940's America. Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson was held by the Germans for nine months before he managed to escape. Jefferson is author of the memoir, Red Tail Captured, Red Tail Free. Capt. Luther H. Smith, Jr. was shot down on his 50th and final mission. Lt. Col. Walter McCreary, who flew 89 missions, holds the Air Medal and the POW Medal. Rounding out this group of distinguished veterans will be Capt. Richard Macon The panel will be moderated by local Tuskegee Airman, 1st Lt. William Holloman.
