Women Fly! is The Museum of Flight's annual event for young women in middle and high school interested in aviation and aerospace careers. Girls are invited to participate in a day of motivational and career-oriented activities that will allow them to meet and learn from professional women working in a variety of aerospace-related careers. Women Fly 2016 will be offered for Middle School students on Thursday, March 24th and for High School students on Friday, March 25th.

Guest speakers for for Women Fly 2016 will be South Korean astronaut Soyeon Yi on Thursday, March 24th and University of Washington scientist Melania Guerra on Friday, March 25th.

Dr. Soyeon Yi - Guest Speaker for March 24th

Soyeon Yi was born June 2, 1978, in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. She earned both a B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 2001 & 2002. Soyeon later earned a Ph.D. in Bio and Brain Engineering from KAIST in 2008 and an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley in 2014.

She interned at the Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials from July 2000 till August 2000. In March 2001, she began designing, fabricating and testing biomedical microelectromechanical systems devices at the Digital Nanolocomotion Center.

In December 2006, she was selected as final two Korean astronaut candidates and started working at the Korean Astronaut Project Division as a researcher. From March 2007 until April 2008 she trained for space at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. On April 8, 2008 she launched into space onboard Soyuz TMA-12 with Russian cosmonauts Sergei Volkov and Oleg Kononenko. Soyeon returned to Earth April 19, 2008 onboard Soyuz TMA-11 along with ISS crew members Peggy Whitson and Yuri Malenchenko.

After her flight, she worked as a researcher while acting as Korea's space ambassador. Dr. Yi enjoys singing, drawing and handiwork, cooking, listening music, watching movies, jogging, and swimming.

The registration fee for Women Fly 2016 will be $15 for each student. This fee will extend to those chaperoning Group Registrations. Financial assistance is available for those who cannot cover the registration fee.
