Saturday, Sept. 22 Wings of Heroes Gala
4:30 to 10 p.m The 2012 Wings of Heroes Gala is a celebration of the men and women who helped make spaceflight a reality and who continue to serve as the visionaries and entrepreneurs who are taking space exploration to even greater heights today. Those in attendance include NASA astronauts and flight controllers from the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz, and Shuttle programs. Honorees also include cosmonauts and spaceflight participants. Buzz Aldrin will present a special tribute to the late Neil Armstrong. In addition to Aldrin, honorees include the first man to walk in space, Alexey Leonov, and the last man to walk on the Moon, Gene Cernan. Legendary NASA mission controller Gene Kranz will also be in attendance. The Gala is sold-out. It is open to credentialed media, prior registration required.
NOTE TO EDITORS: Media access to the Gala is restricted and requires credentials for those who wish to attend. However, media is welcome and encouraged to have their own sneak peek of the Space Gallery this week, prior to the Gala and Sunday's activities and to cover the arrival of the Abbey Papers. You will NOT be granted access to the Gala without pre-arranged press credentials, but guests will be walking down the red carpet prior to entry beginning at approximately 4:30 p.m.
