Air Force combat pilots share stories of war over Europe

SEATTLE, Feb. 15, 2013--Two American Air Force pilots who flew combat missions during World War II will share their dramatic stories during a Feb. 23 lecture. The speakers are Spiros "Steve" Pisanos and Larry Powell. Pisanos is a highly-decorated Air Force "double ace" who flew P-47s and P-51s in World War II. In addition to his heroics in the air, Pisanos is also renowned for helping the French Underground fight the Germans after he was shot down behind enemy lines. Powell is a P-51 pilot who flew in the Eighth Air Force in Europe during World War II. The program is at 2 p.m., and is free with admission to the Museum. Pisanos will be signing copies of his autobiography, "The Flying Greek," after the program.

The Museum of Flight is home to the American Fighter Aces Association, founded to recognize the 1,442 combat pilots who have received the special designation of "ace."
